Haus of Hoodoo
Since 2016, I’ve been the designer for Haus of Hoodoo, a brand that blends spiritual artistry with cultural authenticity. Haus of Hoodoo is Jessyka Winston’s personal business, an apothecary and botanica that reflects her deep-rooted vision of creating sacred tools for spiritual practice. My partnership with Jessyka began in the humble setting of her apartment in Los Angeles, where we collaborated on the initial branding brief that would lay the foundation for everything to come. From those early conversations, we envisioned a brand that would evoke the timeless mysticism of 19th-century aesthetics while standing apart from the traditional botanicas of New Orleans.
Guided by Jessyka’s vision, I developed a visual identity that captured the spirit and authenticity of her work. One of the most distinctive elements of the branding is the monogram icon, which I designed as an ambigram—a visual feat that can be read the same way upside down. This, along with my hand-drawn illustrations, became foundational to the brand’s identity, reinforcing its uniqueness and depth.
At the heart of my work were the product labels and packaging, particularly for the signature candle line. These designs became more than functional—they evolved into artistic expressions, turning the candles into coveted collectibles for the Haus of Hoodoo community. This transformation directly contributed to the business's growth, as the collectible status of the candles helped foster a loyal following, enhanced customer engagement, and boosted sales. Each label, featuring intricate hand-drawn illustrations and carefully crafted typography, reflected the rituals and intentions behind Jessyka’s products, enhancing their meaning to customers.
Beyond product design, I helped shape the brand’s digital and physical presence. From creating captivating social media visuals and engaging newsletters to designing event posters and digital products, every piece contributed to a consistent and elevated aesthetic. For the storefront, I developed bold black and gold vinyl signage and window displays, transforming the space into a visual extension of Jessyka’s vision for the apothecary and botanica—a sacred yet welcoming space.
Haus of Hoodoo’s evolution from an idea in a Los Angeles apartment to a widely recognized and cherished apothecary has been a deeply rewarding journey. This partnership has allowed me to bring Jessyka’s vision to life by merging historical inspiration with contemporary design, creating a distinct identity that continues to resonate with its growing community.
